Ray Lorenzo Heffner papers, 1966-1969.

Consists of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, financial papers, reports, and other materials dating from 1966 to 1969. The materials document the history of Brown University and Ray Lorenzo Heffner's term as president. Subjects include alumni and alumnae, budget and finance, buildings and grounds, the Corporation, the curricula, libraries, campus ROTC programs, students, and the Medical School. Heffner was university president during a period of intense social change, student unrest, and student political activity on campuses. Some of the topics documented in the collection, that reflect the changes which occurred in this period, include: the status of Naval and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, the introduction of co-educational housing, the role of the university in governing student conduct, the establishment of an Afro-American Studies concentration, and curricular reform and the implementation of new curriculum. Building and grounds related subjects include the planning and construction of a new athletics complex, co-educational dormitories, real estate transactions, and urban sprawl from the city campus.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war".
